Workshop On “Global Scientific Data Infrastructures: The Findability Challenge” Taormina, Italy,10–11 May 2012

The Workshop organized by the “Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell’Informazione of the “Italian National Research Council” (ISTI – CNR) in Taormina, Italy, 10-11 May 2012 will address some of the most important topics enabling findability.

The science world contains an unimaginable vast amount of digital data which is getting ever vaster ever more rapidly. In a networked science world one big challenge faced by researchers is findability. By findability we mean ease in locating/discovering data/information/knowledge and data tools/services for specific researcher needs while taking into account relevant aspects of data attributes tool/service functionality and deployability context provenance researcher profiles and goals etc. Currently there is a conceptual shift from search to findability as the Internet search paradigm is characterized by a lack of context where the search is conducted in an independent way from professional profiles context provenance and work goals.In the context of a digital science ecosystem discovering data/information/knowledge tools and services is better served by findability.A findability capability should be of paramount importance for the next generation of global research data infrastructures.Such a capability must be supported by semantic data models semantically rich metadata models ontology/logic based language sfor specifying data tool/service functionality personalization and contextualization support data mining algorithms ontology/taxonomy management mapping/matching techniques etc.

Participation to the Workshop is free, but it is limited to highly motivated researchers. The selection of the participants will be based on their scientific interest. Candidate participants must submit a letter motivating their interest in attending the Workshop together with the application form before March 31st, 2012.
Acceptance of the application will be notified to the applicants by April, 15th, 2012.

The Economist interviews Wolf Dieter, CERN, on the Future of Fundamental Research

The "E" in CERN, the particle-physics laboratory near Geneva and home of the Large Hadron Collidier, used to stand for European but last year CERN invited countries around the world to become associated members and embrace its four-fold mission of research, innovation, training and uniting people. 97 countries now serve as members. In a recent interview with The Economist, Rolf Dieter, director-general at CERN, explains the importance of fundamental research as the ultimate driver of scientific discoveries with the power to change the world. Dieter starts by explaining why not finding the Higgs boson would be as important as finding it. Higgs boson is the last cornerstone. We know everything about. What we don't know is if it exists. Answering this question is expected to happen over the next few years. If it doesn't exist, it means scientists will need to find the other mechanism that demonstrates its non-existence. Fundamental research drives innovation because it leads to new knowledge by addressing burning questions and ensuring we have a basis for applied science. For example, fundamental research on electricity led to applied research on transforming it into something useful for society. We need to retain this virtuous circle irrespective of the time-frames involved. The Large Hadron Collider has taken 30 years from idea to implementation and CERN continues to think long term with a plan to use the LHC for the next twenty years while also seeing it as a 'discovery machine' that will spur investigations into next steps for fundamental research. Dieter believes that big science projects important to demonstrate that we are able to work together globally by pulling at the same strings and moving in the same direction. This is an important achievement for mankind and to attract young people into science. Fundamental research at CERN and other large facilities across Europe may not bring immediate advances but when they do come, we can be sure they will change the world.
